Overview: Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers consist of injections of a naturally occurring substance that adds volume to hollowed areas or augments certain features for increased facial symmetry. The most common type of filler is made of hyaluronic acid which is found in the joints, eyes, and skin. It is injected in a gel form which allows it to be positioned ideally based on the patient’s needs.
Hyaluronic acid is also a type of substance known as a humectant. Humectants retain water and draw water to them. This helps increase the plumping effect and hydrate the skin. Some hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers retain more water than others. Therefore, Dr. Jindal may recommend certain fillers based on how much water retention is ideal for any given treatment area.
Other fillers contain ingredients such as poly-L-lactic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite. These are longer lasting, semi-permanent fillers that promote a more powerful collagen response. This type of filler is usually recommended for those who want gradual, natural increases in volume, skin tightening, and collagen stimulation—and is frequently used in combination with hyaluronic acid fillers. They are also not dissolvable or reversible like HA fillers.
Filler Brands
Over the years, the FDA approved several fillers for use in the United States. The earliest ones were hyaluronic acid fillers made by Juvederm and Restylane (Perlane). These two manufacturers still provide the most popular fillers today.
As far as semi-permanent fillers, Sculptra and Radiesse are the two most used options. Other filler brands that are FDA approved include Belotero, Revanesse, and Bellafill. Dr. Jindal also specializes in using fat and plasma as natural filler options as well.
- Restylane: Restylane is a brand of hyaluronic acid fillers that focuses on fillers individualized to specific treatment areas. For example, Restylane Kysse is exclusively for the lips and Restylane Contour for the cheeks. Compared to Juvederm, the fillers are a little thinner and do not draw in as much water. JIYA tends to recommend Restylane Versa–also known as Revanesse Versa–for lips because it provides a natural result and is easier to shape.
- Juvederm: Also a brand of hyaluronic acid fillers, Juvederm focuses on creating thicker, longer lasting fillers. Juvederm Voluma, for example, is the longest lasting hyaluronic acid filler on the market. They retain more water making Juvederm ideal for dramatic augmentation of the lips, chin, and cheeks.

Injections of any type do come with some risks. While usually minimal, it is important to understand and weigh these risks before undergoing the procedure. Certain patients may be at a higher risk based on various factors. Some of the possible risks include:
- Infection
- Prolonged side effects
- Scarring
- Nerve damage
- Allergic reaction
- Blood vessel blockage (occlusion)
- Formation of granulomas

Most of the time complications or risks are minor and completely treatable. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the lowest risk option because they can be dissolved immediately in the case of an adverse reaction or complication.
Treatment Areas & Uses
Lip Filler
Lip filler serves two primary purposes. First, it can augment thin lips to bring better balance to the facial features. Additionally, plump lips have become especially popular over the last decade and fillers have become the most reliable way to achieve it. Secondly, lip filler can diminish the appearance of lines around the lips (smoker’s lines) and on the lips (lipstick lines) that may appear with age.
Some lip filler choices include:
- Restylane Versa
- Juvederm Ultra
- InnerBeauty Natural Filler (plasma or fat)
Under Eye Filler
Hollowed and dark under the eyes can happen due to genetics and age. Dermal fillers can fill in these hollows and brighten up the eyes. It can reduce the tired, unapproachable look that is nearly permanent for some people genetically predisposed to dark circles and hollowed eyes.
Popular tear trough filler options include:
- Restylane-L
- Juvederm Volbella
- InnerBeauty Natural Filler (plasma or fat)
Cheek Filler
Cheek filler accentuates the cheekbones for a more defined and sleek look. For men, it can also create a more chiseled effect. It can address signs of aging as well as naturally undefined cheeks. Common cheek fillers include:
- Restylane Contour
- Juvederm Voluma
- InnerBeauty Natural Filler (plasma or fat)

It may also help reduce the look of a soft double chin.
Fillers used in the chin include:
- Juvederm Voluma
- Restylane Defyne
- InnerBeauty Natural Filler (plasma or fat)

- Restylane Lyft
- Juvederm Voluma
- InnerBeauty Natural Filler (plasma or fat)

- Restylane Lyft
- Juvederm Voluma
- InnerBeauty Natural Filler (plasma or fat)
Nose Filler
Known as a non-surgical rhinoplasty, nose filler can fill in unwanted humps on the nose bridge and make minor changes to the overall shape of the nose. Filler often used for non-surgical rhinoplasty include:
- Restylane Defyne
- Juvederm Ultra Plus
- InnerBeauty Natural Filler (plasma or fat)
Smile Line Filler
The smile lines are sometimes formed by genetics, facial movements, or both. Many people become bothered when these lines deepen with age. Dermal fillers were first approved for use in the smile lines and similar folds, thus, there are countless options. It is also a frequently performed procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
The amount of time injectable dermal fillers last primarily depends on the type of filler you get. Other environmental and biological factors can contribute. On average, you can expect hyaluronic acid fillers to last between six and twelve months with deviation based on individuals. Some thicker fillers such as Juvederm Voluma have been known to last up to two years in certain areas.
Regardless, fillers are not permanent and will eventually need to be refreshed to maintain results. This has both benefits and drawbacks based on your preferences, but it does allow you to change up your look or discontinue use if you decide they no longer match your lifestyle.
There is a pervasive myth that filler injections actually age you faster. There are two reasons why this myth persists. First, for people who regularly refresh their fillers, they get used to what their face looks like with fillers. So, once they let them totally dissolve, this can be startingly. Additionally, fillers do not prevent aging, you continue to age with fillers, they just disguise it.
The other reason this myth continues to make its way around internet forums is a condition called pillow face. This is when an unskilled practioner overfills the face. Done once, this usually is not a big deal. However, if done regularly, this can cause damage to the skin. As long as you see a qualified injector and do not have your face overfilled, you will likely not need to worry about this.
Dermal fillers do not come with a traditional recovery like surgery. However, you should avoid strenuous exercise and some activities immediately after surgery. Dr. Jindal will give you personalized instructions based on your medical history. Some instructions you may receive include:
- Avoid touching the area
- Lay on your back when sleeping
- Do not partake in intense exercise for two to three days
- Take only Tylenol for pain or swelling
- Limit sun exposure
- Do not undergo chemical peels, facials, or waxing for a few weeks
- Only massage if instructed
The choice between hyaluronic acid fillers and semi-permanent fillers can be difficult. If you are a first time filler patient, it is best to start with hyaluronic acid fillers since they can be dissolved, are lower risk, and are less likely to have adverse reactions. An exception to this is if you have had extreme facial fat loss or another similar condition where a semi-permanent filler is the better treatment.
Semi-permanent fillers generally are recommended outside of these cases only to those who are experienced with filler injections or have much more advanced signs of aging. Dr. Jindal will discuss all options with you so that you can make a confident and informed decision.
Patients normally do not feel too much pain during Raleigh dermal filler injections. However, we do offer numbing cream and other methods of reducing pain and discomfort during the injections. Additionally, most fillers contain a small amount of lidocaine which help ease the pain as well.
